ibVPN is one of the most popular anonymous and secure VPN providers on the market.
The service lets users browse the web from anywhere in the world, without any access restriction, while at the same time encrypting their internet traffic via secure internationally located servers.
If you live abroad and need to access country-restricted websites/services such as BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Sky Go, Pandora and many more, ibVPN will allow to access the internet from your desired country, unblocking your favorite sites in an instant.
We tested ibVPN servers for connection speeds through several key locations including in North America, Europe and Asia. Our tests were run out of Europe using an 80 Mb/s fibre-optic connection. Here are the results:
1. Seattle, USA
Out of the four speed tests conducted, this was one of the farthest in terms of distance, and considering this node is located half way around the world, the result shows that a decent fibre-optic connection can still achieve a strong connection even via a VPN server on the US west coast. Through Seattle, we managed to notch 31 Mb/s in download speed and 5 Mb/s in upload speed
2. Montreal, Canada
Being connected to a North American server out of Europe does not necessarily mean having to sacrifice performance. If the endpoint server is fast enough, you will get to enjoy a long-distance VPN connection with nearly no significant loss of speed, which is exactly what this ibVPN server in Montreal, Canada shows. We managed to achieve 60 Mb/s in download speed, an equally impressive 10.53 Mb/s in upload speed and a pretty decent ping response of 146 ms. Overall the connection remained faster than most of Canada without VPN in the picture.
3. Maidstone, United Kingdom
Whilst connected to a server in Maidstone in the United Kingdom, we managed to get 65 Mb/s in download speed and an excellent upload speed result of 16 Mb/s, demonstrating that you can expect strong performance when connected to an anonymous UK IP address.
For our final test, we connected to a server in Singapore, therefore losing a good chunk of original speed was to be expected. Although we achieved 15 Mb/s in download speed and a long ping response, we have to note that this server is better designated for Asia residents, particularly in countries such as China. By being closer to the server, the connection speed will suffer less, delivering much better results, such as the ones we saw with our speed tests through European locations.
ibVPN initially started out as a VPN provider. However the company expanded by adding another great feature to their catalogue, and it’s called ibDNS. If you’re unfamiliar with smart DNS services, they are designed to trick websites with geo-blocked content into thinking that you are visiting them from a valid location. ibDNS is ideal for unblocking web and differs from the traditional VPN connection in that it doesn’t route your traffic via any external servers, but instead works by making making slight configurations to your browser’s DNS settings.
The downside of SmartDNS services is that they don’t offer any actual encryption to safeguard your traffic. The upside – your internet speeds remain untouched. So if you only require a solution for overcoming regional and international blocks, this is one of the best ways to achieve it. Additionally, ibDNS comes inclusive of the Total and Ultimate VPN packages.
ibDNS is optimised to unblock a huge variety of specific web destinations, such as Netflix, HULU, Spotify, iPlayer, Sky Go and many more international channels and services. The full list is available via the ibVPN website.
ibVPN’s servers are located in 16 countries, such as USA, UK, Canada, Hong Kong, France and Germany. These servers promise excellent performance with minimal loss of speed, allowing you to download or stream as comfortably as you would with your normal internet connection. With ibVPN you also have unlimited access to all of their servers, having the option to change you IP address to another location (or country) at any given time.
One of the most important features to take into account is that the service offers unlimited bandwidth and does not store your usage logs. This lets you enjoy the internet without running out of monthly data allowance and without having to worry that your browsing habits are exposed to anyone but yourself. The level of security can be instantly configured with ibVPN’s Windows software or iOS application, that lets you change your required security protocol between PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN and SSTP.
ibVPN also offer their own free Android app (for versions 4.0+), which, just like their desktop and iOS application allows users to choose their own servers, check their IP and enjoy the VPN without any irritating limitations. Bandwidth remains unrestricted for mobile VPN just as it does for desktop.
